MULTIGENERATIONAL LEADERSHIP CLOUT: Building a Learning Culture of TRUST for SUSTAINABLE Bottom Line Results, Before the World War for Talent Strikes

Trust Handshake rocks

Once upon a time, long, long ago, there was what seemed to be a single generation in the workforce.  We now refer to them affectionately as the silent generation.  These are the people loyal to their company and worked until retirement.  Up to then, generation after generation learned how to lead based upon what worked and did or did not work for their predecessors.  We learned, as is human nature, because this did not work before, we will not go down that path again.  Like touching a hot stove; get burned once, I will not touch it again.  While this worked for decades following World War II, the 1960’s saw the beginning of an evolution as boomers began to enter this sacred workforce and shake things up. THE ISSUE:  Multigenerational Lack of Understanding, Lack of … [Read more...]

BUILDING TRUST: You MUST have an EVALUATION STRATEGY. IF you cannot show your value you are EXPENDABLE TODAY—Are YOU willing to take the RISK?

Wake Up! Evaluation is critical to TRUST and KEEPING YOUR JOB!

As a profession, training, now recognized by the Department of Labor as Workplace Learning and Performance (WLP), has often been an after thought.  Most, companies do not consider training as a primary investment nor do they include the learning function in critical organizational decisions.  It has been empirically proven that a high performing, organization’s investment in learning is directly proportionate to the success of those organizations.  Executives realize they need their people, but in polls taken by executives, training is not making the top lists of what executives see as important. This week I presented the State of the Industry Report in Sacramento, CA.  My program was immediately followed by the esteemed Dr. Jack Phillips of the ROI Institute.  The outlook … [Read more...]

INTUITION: Do You Act on Yours? Do you use an Evidence-based Strategy?

INTUITION: Do you TRUST yours? Do you use an EVIDENCE-BASED STRATEGY?

Using an evidence-based strategy that includes both intuition and the appropriate evidence provides greater confidence and positioning in a way that creates clarity and the ability to position solutions. Considerations are presented for workplace learning and performance improvement during the analysis stage.  With experience one would hope comes wisdom.  Wisdom helps one become present to the voices of their intuition. However, models such as the Project Life Cycle, ADDIE (analyze, develop, design, implement, evaluate) model for ISD (instructional systems design) and the  HPI (Human Performance Improvement) model each require thorough analysis.  The purpose of having models such as these is to support and discipline the consultant/designer to not omit this essential piece of the … [Read more...]

Take Time to ACKNOWLEDGE YOUR LIFE MENTORS

Ronald McDonald

I recently realized a mentor passed away 1 year ago this month. This inspired me to take action and inspire others to take the time to say thank you! This week I was researching my career history and going back to my foundational days when I first entered the workforce and to research and prepare my references for the potential to expect a phone call. As I began the process, I discovered through the power of the Internet, that my initial mentor in business, Charlie Harnish, passed away one year ago this month. My recent discovery inspired me to write this. Charlie, to me, was an inspirational leader and mentor that significantly shaped my foundation as a leader. He was unaware of this at the time, as was I. But, later, much later I realized how much he inspired me and I was able to … [Read more...]

EMPOWERMENT: The Leader’s Magic

Empowerment

I read an amazing article the other day, Leadership: The Art of Empowering Others (http://www.jstor.org/pss/4164863). Empowerment is where we as leaders give ownership to our people. Empowerment is often diluted by parameters and limitations which are counter-productive. We as leaders have to provide the mechanisms that support and equip our people to take on empowerment in the workplace. The article states that empowerment is "not simply a set of external actions; it is a process of changing the internal beliefs of people." People are powerful and often times are not in touch with their power for various reasons. Effective leaders realize this and help their people get in touch with their power. How they do this depends on the person and what is limiting them. Leaders can hone in … [Read more...]
